Game of chance in which tickets sold may win
a prize. In the UK lotteries are subject to
strict government regulation. The largest
lottery is the government-issued Premium
Savings Bonds (from 1956), repayable at par
without interest, but eligible for monthly
prize-winning draws. In the USA state
lotteries may bring a winner many millions;
for example, in Illinois in 1984 one ticket
brought a prize of $40 million. In the US,
the players choose numbers that, if selected
in a random drawing, can bring the winner
millions of dollars. State-sponsored
lotteries are a means of raising revenue,
especially for education and other public
needs.
